Making Public Transport More Inclusive Through Uniform Design
Supporting a more inclusive uniform experience for Abellio London.
For almost 10 years, we've been proud to work alongside Abellio London, designing and supplying uniforms that support colleagues across the business.
When it came to launching a new driver uniform in 2022, the focus wasn't just on the garments themselves. It was also about creating a more inclusive experience for everyone who wears them.
Making uniform choice more inclusive
Abellio London has offered a gender-inclusive uniform for several years, with very little difference between the wardrobe options available. As part of its ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, it wanted to take this one step further by making the ordering process more inclusive too.
The aim was simple: remove unnecessary barriers and give every driver the freedom to choose the uniform that feels right for them.
A better ordering experience
Working closely with Abellio London, we enhanced our online ordering portal, Detail, to make this possible.
Instead of directing colleagues to separate "male" or "female" uniform collections, drivers can now browse the full range of available garments and select the options that best suit their preferences and needs.
This approach supports all colleagues, including those who identify as cisgender, transgender or non-binary, while creating a simpler and more inclusive ordering experience for everyone.
Designed around people
We believe great uniform design is about more than appearance. It's about helping people feel comfortable, confident and able to be themselves at work.
By combining inclusive thinking with flexible technology, we've been able to help Abellio London create a uniform experience that better reflects the diverse workforce it supports.
Lawrence Wilson, Deputy Operations Director, said:
"For this launch we made it easier for all colleagues to order items that would previously have been restricted to a specific gender. When they make a selection, they are no longer directed to only 'male' or 'female' categories. Instead, it is possible to make a selection from the entire uniform collection. This has been a positive step towards creating an inclusive environment in which to work and we are delighted that Dimensions could support us with this workplace diversity and inclusion initiative."
