Delivery locations
The new uniform keeps the iconic Royal Mail red, marking the first update in more than 10 years and reflecting the changing demands of the job.
With rising parcel volumes, daily rounds have become more physically demanding, so the new uniform was designed to be practical and comfortable for colleagues of all ages, genders, and body shapes.
Colleagues across all Royal Mail functions helped shape the look and feel of the updates. The range now includes walking trousers, shorts, tops, soft shell jackets, gilets, and headwear—built to meet the challenges of modern delivery rounds.
Our team of design, fabric, and product development specialists worked alongside a leading biomechanics expert to make sure the uniform supports the highly physical work Royal Mail posties do every day.
The journey to the new range began in 2018, with over 1,000 colleagues from across the UK sharing what worked, what didn’t, and what they really needed, from Lincoln to London, Colchester to Chorley.
We also worked closely with the CWU at national conferences to make sure every detail was right.
Behind the scenes, our design, fabric, tech, and product development specialists brought their A‑game. Some even joined delivery rounds to experience the job firsthand, getting a real sense of the pace, the pressure, and the passion of frontline roles.
a new uniform for
We worked with a leading biomechanist to better understand how clothing supports the way the body moves at work. This helped us recognise Royal Mail colleagues as “occupational athletes”, where fit, comfort, fabric and function all matter.
Two uniform ranges were designed to support colleagues working both indoors and outdoors, ensuring each role had the right clothing for the job.
An iconic colour, red continues to represent the trust Royal Mail brings to doorsteps every day.

Tender
In 2018 Royal Mail Group launched a competitive tender for the supply of workwear, footwear, hi-visibility clothing and PPE across its 3 brands: Royal Mail, Parcelforce and PFS.
In October 2019, we were successfully awarded the contract following the tender process.

Wearer trial
In 2021, 347 colleagues across 42 offices trialled the new range over three months, representing roles from delivery and drivers to fleet specialist services and mail centre engineers.

Always improving
The rollout was just the start. We continue to evolve the range with Royal Mail, helping colleagues perform at their best every day.

Terence
Through our group Uniform Hero campaign, colleagues told us what their uniform means to them. Terence's story stood out from hundreds of entries, so we surprised him at work with the Uniform Hero award.
"Uniform gives you a sense of belonging, pride and achievement. Wearing a uniform gives you a chance to escape the pressure of having to wear something new to the office everyday and keep with the fashion, saves you money, and maybe have input into a new design if the business is having a face lift."
Words from the people who wear our uniforms every day, sharing what works, what matters, and why it makes a difference.

"I #lovemyuniform because I look smart and represent Royal Mail with the utmost professionalism and respect. I’ve had countless of my customers on my post route comment on how amazing I look with my Royal Mail uniform and they all love it.
I’m known locally and on BBC radio 1, and by Royal Mail mangers in my area as the cowboy postie with all the energy who always has a smile on my face no matter the weather. This is the best job I’ve ever had and I hope to be in this for many years to come. I am the most colourful and charismatic postie my local area has ever seen." -

"I love my uniform because I feel like the famous red Royal Mail uniform speaks for itself. Thousands of people around the country feel like their postman is part of their community. I feel proud to wear it.
This particular photo is myself and a colleague accepting a hamper donated by a certain community leader for our hard work and actions during covid where many people had nobody but their postman to talk to all day." -

"For me, wearing the Royal Mail uniform makes me feel proud… my grandad was a Postie, so it feels like I’m following in his footsteps. We do an important job, provide a service to those who can’t get out very easily, delivering parcels, letters and bills, along with collecting them.
Everybody knows the Royal Mail uniform and people tend to trust us. We have been going for hundreds of years, so it’s nice to work for one of Britain’s longest services and wear the uniform with pride.
But wearing the Royal Mail uniform also means a lot more, you’re a community icon. You get to know your customers, a friendly smile and a little chat goes a long way, especially to those people who are alone, you might be the only person that they speak to all day, or even all week.
So for me, wearing the Royal Mail uniform isn’t just a job, it’s a uniform that makes you part of the community, it makes me feel proud and I wear it with pride." -

"As being sun sensitive, allergic to the sun doesn’t stop me doing the job I love outdoors in all weathers! And wearing the uniform knowing I’m helping the public get there’s parcels and letters in time gives me great satisfaction! And also the uniform provides me with protection from the harmful sun rays and people often stop to ask me why I am are fully covered up even in summer times so I’m also educating the general public in why I’m covered so spreading awareness at the same time and encouraging others follow their dreams, think out the box - illnesses and allergies shouldn’t stop you doing the job you love. We get one life so do your best live to the full and spread positive energy and be proud of your uniform in whatever you do as we all are heroes."
