Supporting future talent has always been an important part of what we do at Dimensions. By working closely with universities and colleges, we're able to share industry knowledge, encourage fresh thinking and help develop the next generation of designers and innovators.

As part of this commitment, we partnered with the University of Derby's Fashion BA (Hons) course to challenge second-year students to reimagine what the future of workwear could look like.

Bridging education and industry

The collaboration gave students the opportunity to work on a real-world design brief, developed by our award-winning Design team. Throughout the project, our specialists worked alongside students, sharing practical insight into designing uniforms that balance functionality, comfort, durability and brand identity.

Rather than designing purely for the catwalk, students were encouraged to think about the everyday needs of thousands of uniform wearers across a wide range of industries.

Designing the uniform of the future

Students explored how workplace clothing could evolve, considering topics including:

  • Sustainable materials and circular design
  • Comfort and wearer wellbeing
  • Inclusivity and accessibility
  • Innovation in technical fabrics
  • Practical features for different working environments
  • Brand identity and professional appearance

Throughout the project, the Dimensions team regularly visited the university to review progress, provide feedback and offer guidance based on real customer projects. We also donated specialist fabrics to help students develop and prototype their concepts.

Fresh ideas with a sustainable focus

Many of the students placed sustainability at the heart of their designs, exploring recycled materials, responsible sourcing and innovative ways to reduce environmental impact while maintaining performance and durability.

These themes continue to play an increasingly important role in modern uniform design, making the project particularly relevant to the future of the industry.

Creating valuable career opportunities

Partnerships like this don't just benefit students, they also help us connect with emerging talent. Several students have previously gone on to complete work experience placements with Dimensions, gaining valuable commercial experience by working alongside our Design team on live customer projects.

Collaborations with universities help bridge the gap between education and industry, giving students a clearer understanding of how professional uniform design differs from fashion design, while providing invaluable experience before they begin their careers.

Investing in the future of uniform design

At Dimensions, we believe innovation comes from collaboration. By working with universities, supporting future designers and encouraging new perspectives, we're helping shape the future of workwear.

We're proud to support the next generation of creative talent and look forward to continuing partnerships that inspire fresh ideas, drive innovation and contribute to the future of the uniform industry.
