Reducing Plastic Waste in Our Uniform Supply Chain

Written by Dimensions | 7/1/20 7:00 AM

Plastic pollution continues to be one of the world's biggest environmental challenges. While there's no single solution, businesses have an important role to play in reducing waste and finding more sustainable ways of designing, manufacturing and delivering products.

At Dimensions, we're committed to continually improving the sustainability of our supply chain. From reducing unnecessary packaging to exploring innovative recycled materials, we're always looking for practical ways to minimise waste and lower our environmental impact.

Here are some of the ways we're helping to reduce plastic waste across our uniform programmes.

Rethinking packaging

Packaging is often one of the biggest sources of single-use plastic within the garment industry.

That's why we've worked to reduce unnecessary packaging throughout our supply chain. One of our early initiatives reduced packaging by 40%, saving the equivalent of around 480,000 plastic bottles in its first year.

We're continuing to build on this work by introducing alternative packaging methods, including paper wrapping and innovative roll-and-tuck techniques that reduce the need for plastic while still protecting garments during transport.

Giving materials a second life

Recycling doesn't stop with packaging.

We've introduced initiatives that allow redundant plastic name badges to be returned to our supplier, where the material is recycled and transformed into new products, helping divert waste away from landfill.

Finding practical ways to keep materials in use for longer is an important part of creating a more circular supply chain.

Creating fabrics from recycled materials

Innovation is helping transform the way uniforms are made.

One example is the use of surplus cotton fabric from factory cutting rooms. Instead of being discarded, the cotton is collected, sorted by colour and blended with recycled polyester created from PET plastic bottles.

The result is a durable poly-cotton fabric that gives new life to materials that might otherwise become waste.

We can also source fabrics made using recycled ocean-bound plastic, transforming recovered plastic into high-quality polyester yarn suitable for workwear and corporate clothing.

Using recycled polyester helps reduce reliance on virgin petroleum-based materials while supporting efforts to divert plastic from landfill and the environment.

Small changes can make a big difference

Reducing plastic waste isn't achieved through one single initiative. It's the result of continually reviewing processes, embracing innovation and looking for opportunities to improve at every stage of the supply chain.

Whether that's reducing packaging, increasing recycled content or finding new ways to reuse materials, every improvement helps move us closer to a more sustainable future.

Building more sustainable uniform programmes

Sustainability is an ongoing journey, and we're committed to working with our customers and suppliers to identify opportunities that reduce waste without compromising on quality or performance.

By combining thoughtful design with responsible sourcing and innovative materials, we're helping organisations create uniform programmes that support both their people and the planet.
