Inspiring the Next Generation of Nurses Through Uniform

What children see can shape what they believe is possible. That's why Dimensions was proud to support NHS Scotland and the Scottish Government on the innovative Future Nurse campaign, helping to challenge outdated perceptions of nursing and inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.

By creating child-sized versions of the modern NHS nursing uniform, the project encouraged primary school pupils to see nursing as the diverse, skilled and rewarding career it is today.

Challenging outdated stereotypes

The Future Nurse campaign was developed around a simple but powerful idea: many children's perceptions of nursing are formed at a young age.

Traditional dressing-up costumes often portray nurses wearing capes, hats and carrying basic medical equipment, an image that no longer reflects modern nursing.

Today's nurses work across a wide range of specialist roles, using advanced clinical skills, technology and expertise to care for patients in hospitals, communities and specialist settings.

The project aimed to replace outdated stereotypes with an authentic representation of the profession.

Creating realistic, inclusive uniforms

Working with NHS Scotland, Dimensions produced child-sized versions of the national nursing uniform for use in primary schools.

The uniforms were designed to be gender neutral, allowing every child to imagine themselves in a nursing career, regardless of gender or background.

By providing realistic uniforms, children could engage in role play that better reflected the modern healthcare workforce.

Launching the Future Nurse campaign

The pilot programme launched in primary schools across Aberdeen and Edinburgh, with support from NHS Grampian, NHS Lothian, the Scottish Government and education partners.

The initiative gave pupils the opportunity to learn more about nursing while exploring healthcare careers in an engaging and inclusive way.

Teachers and pupils provided feedback throughout the pilot, helping to evaluate the programme and explore opportunities for future expansion.

Supporting the future healthcare workforce

At Dimensions, we know that uniform is about much more than clothing. It helps people feel part of a team, builds confidence and represents professional identity.

Supporting projects like Future Nurse demonstrates how uniform can also inspire future careers and encourage children to see themselves in roles they may never previously have considered.

By working alongside healthcare organisations, we're proud to help create initiatives that support recruitment, diversity and inclusion across the NHS.

Looking beyond the uniform

This collaboration reflects our wider commitment to supporting organisations that make a positive impact in their communities.

Whether designing uniforms for frontline professionals or helping inspire the workforce of tomorrow, we believe great uniform can play an important role in building confidence, breaking down barriers and creating opportunities.

We're proud to have supported NHS Scotland and the Scottish Government on a project that continues to demonstrate the positive role uniform can play in shaping the future of healthcare.
